WHAT IS PureTech?

Winner of the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 International Engine of the Year award in the 1.0-litre to 1.4-litre category, PEUGEOT PureTech is advanced 3-cylinder petrol engine technology that offers a drive and performance normally associated with much bigger engines but with significantly improved fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Put simply, a 1.2 PureTech engine gives you the power and performance of a 1.6 litre engine, but the efficiency of a smaller engine.

It’s a product of PEUGEOT’s 120-plus years of intelligent, innovative engineering and combines reduced weight materials with the efficiency of applying direct fuel injection to three cylinders.

We’ve also added Turbo power, optimising torque at all revs and delivering an engine with a unique personality and one which is ultimately designed to give you maximum driving pleasure and responsiveness, at any speed, for less.

Our PureTech turbo petrol engine is available in the 208, 2008 SUV and 308.

Why are 3 cylinders better than 4?

  • Increases fuel efficiency (one cylinder less of fuel to burn)
  • Less friction (one less cylinder results in a lower surface area, saving fuel)
  • Lighter weight (meaning less fuel has to be burnt to move the vehicle)


In addition to this an aluminium cast-iron-lined block (for quicker engine warm up), the use of low friction materials and a revised cooling system maximise efficiency, reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.

BlueHDi ENGINES

Having created the most efficient system on the market in terms of reduction of harmful emissions, PEUGEOT now confirms its leadership in respect of environmental efficiency. 

BlueHDi is the name given to the company's Euro 6 diesel engines, which combine top-notch performance with minimised emissions

BlueHDi technology offers an exclusive combination of oxidation catalyst, SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and FAP (additive particulate filter) system, allowing the engine to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) by up to 90% and cut CO2 emissions down to as low as 82g/km, while also reducing fuel consumption and eliminating up to 99.9% of all fine particles

BlueHDi technology complies fully with the Euro 6 standard. The technology will be used on all PEUGEOT diesel models, and offers the best available potential in respect of future pollution reduction standards.

PEUGEOT EAT6 Automatic Gearbox

EAT6 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

The EAT6 (Efficient Automatic Transmission 6) gearbox is a 6-speed automatic gearbox, optimising consumption and driving sensations. It has been designed to drastically reduce carbon emissions while offering a high quality of driving.

EAT8 AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

The new automatic transmission EAT8 can reduce fuel consumption up to 7% compared to the EAT6 by improving output with the extension of Stop & Start up to 20 km/h and the transition to eight speeds.

STOP AND START

Available in our latest generation of petrol (e-THP) and HDi diesel (e-HDi) engines is the Stop & Start system.

Ideal for driving in the city, the Stop & Start feature automatically stops the engine whenever the car is waiting at a standstill - at a red light, for example, or when confronted with a "Stop" sign. Then, once the driver is ready to move on, the engine restarts gently and instantly.

This is beneficial in any number of ways: fuel consumption is kept under tighter control (-5% less than with a conventional vehicle when driving in dense urban traffic), CO2 emissions are reduced (zero emissions when the engine is stopped) and the car remains silent while waiting.

In short, Stop & Start technology allows you to combine environmentally friendly performance with the full measure of driving enjoyment!

And for total compatibility with all driving modes, Stop & Start can also be deactivated.


EMP2 PLATFORM

PEUGEOT Efficiency - EMP2 platform

The EMP2 platform (Efficient Modular Platform 2) has a modular construction central to the design and manufacture of the new mid-range and high-end models of the PSA Group which in particular provides:

  • A modular architecture to meet the specific requirements of the main world markets (4- and 5-door saloons, estates, monospaces, notchbacks, SUVs, convertibles and coupés)
  • A diversity of engines and gearboxes on a single platform (4-cylinder, hybrid, 4 wheel drive, etc.)
  • A lightening of the cars and a reduction in carbon emissions while improving rigidity, security and driving pleasure thanks to its innovative lightweight materials like steel, composite materials, aluminium for ground links and cutting-edge processes (such as hot stamping and laser welding)
  • Innovative technological choices optimising steering pleasure, handling, interior comfort and safety (composite floor, ultra-low rolling resistance tyres, etc.)
  • More freedom of style (large wheels, variability of wheelbases, low bonnet and low driving position, etc.) regardless of the silhouette (SUV, saloon, etc.)

Launched for the PEUGEOT 308 in 2013, the EMP2 platform has been used to produce the new PEUGEOT  3008 SUV and 5008 SUV and the new Traveller and Expert.


FAP - DIESEL PARTICLE FILTER

FAP (additive particulate filter) is PEUGEOT's solution for dealing with particle emissions in diesel engines. All the brand's HDi models come fitted with this technology.

The FAP system is self-cleaning. It treats gases generated by the combustion of diesel fuel and eliminates up to 99.9% of all particle emissions, irrespective of particle size and of the operating condition of the vehicle.

There are two stages to the process: first, particles are caught in a porous filter made of silicium carbide. After a few hundred kilometers, the regeneration stage is reached, in which the particles are incinerated at a very high temperature. The process is automatic and entirely undetectable.
